Bike-friendly continues to be the stance of Aschaffenburg community
In July 2025, the Working Group of Bike-Friendly Municipalities in Bavaria (AGFK) held a specialist excursion in the city of Aschaffenburg. The event was attended by 35 Bavarian cycling experts from various regions, who gathered to learn about the framework conditions, implementations, and current projects in Aschaffenburg related to cycling promotion.
The city administration supports cycling promotion with annual continuous funding of around 1 million euros. This funding has contributed to the steady progress of the 2015 cycling concept, gradually closing gaps in the cycle route network.
Recent construction projects include the expansion and renovation of the Main cycle path, the marking of the cycle street in Auweg, and the new construction of the pedestrian and cycle path on the B 26 Darmstadt Street by the State Building Authority Aschaffenburg. These improvements have enhanced the urban network of main cycle routes to the city districts and neighboring municipalities.
Aschaffenburg was first awarded the "Bike-Friendly Municipality" status by the AGFK and was recertified in 2024. The city can bear this title until 2031. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the cycling concept, an image film was created and can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zvd64ScXmiM and on the city's social media channels.
The AGFK includes numerous cities, municipalities, and districts, and as of 2025, over 70 have been awarded the "Bike-Friendly Municipality" status. Cooperation in the Cycling Forum with societal representatives ensures transparency and participation on a broad basis.
State Minister Bernreiter presented a certificate during the event to Mayor Herzing, acknowledging Aschaffenburg's commitment to promoting cycling. The overall process of designing a bike-friendly city is a long-term task, and the city continues to work towards improving safety and riding comfort along the main cycle routes.
An annual status report informs the city council in the Planning and Traffic Senate about the progress made in the implementation of the cycling concept. The cycling excursion started on the Theaterplatz in Aschaffenburg, providing the experts with a firsthand look at the city's cycling infrastructure.
