Bihar's 2025 election reshapes power as NDA secures historic landslide win

The 2025 Bihar assembly election saw a dramatic shift in power, with the NDA securing a landslide victory. The alliance expanded its seat count from 125 in 2020 to 202, while the Mahagathbandhan (MGB) suffered its worst performance since 2010, winning just 35 seats. The results reflect changing political dynamics, particularly in key regions like Magadh, Bhojpur, and Tirhut. The NDA's success came from strong coordination among its allies, ensuring votes transferred smoothly between parties. This unity helped them retain core support while expanding into new social groups. In contrast, the MGB struggled to grow beyond its traditional base, losing ground in critical areas.

In Tirhut, the NDA's seat tally surged by 22, reaching 64, with its vote share climbing from 39 percent to 46.6 percent. Despite a slight increase in its own vote share—rising about 2 percentage points to 38.4 percent—the MGB lost 22 seats in the same region.

Magadh and Bhojpur saw a similar trend. The NDA dominated with 57 seats in Magadh and 19 in Bhojpur, backed by a significant rise in vote share. The MGB's decline in these areas was sharp, partly due to vote fragmentation and the NDA's consolidation. Historical factors also played a role, including RJD's limited appeal beyond Yadavs and Muslims, ongoing corruption allegations against Lalu Prasad Yadav, and the Left's weakening influence since its 1990s peak.

In Mithila, the NDA further strengthened its position, increasing its seat count from 32 to 36. Its vote share there rose by roughly 6 percentage points to 47.4 percent. The election results confirm the NDA's growing dominance in Bihar, with gains across multiple regions. The MGB's failure to expand its support base, combined with the NDA's improved coordination, decided the outcome. The shift in Magadh, Bhojpur, and Tirhut highlights how vote consolidation and regional strategies shaped this election.
