Bicycle-friendly city of Aschaffenburg continues to thrive

In the heart of Bavaria, the city of Aschaffenburg has been making significant strides in promoting bicycle traffic over the past decade. A continuous annual funding of around 1 million euros has led to the implementation of numerous measures, making the city more bike-friendly than ever.

The city's commitment to cycling was recognised in 2015 when it was awarded the title "Bicycle-Friendly Municipality" by the Working Group on Bicycle-Friendly Municipalities in Bavaria (AGFK). In 2024, Aschaffenburg was recertified for another six years, extending its title until 2031.

The recertification came after a specialist excursion by the AGFK in July 2025. The excursion, which began on the Theaterplatz in Aschaffenburg, was attended by 35 Bavarian bicycle traffic experts from various regions. The purpose of the excursion was to inform the experts about the framework conditions, implementations, and current projects within the context of bicycle traffic promotion in Aschaffenburg.

The city administration supports bicycle traffic promotion in their respective areas of responsibility. This support can be seen in the recent completion of several construction projects. The expansion and renovation of the Main cycle path, the marking of the cycle street in the Auweg, and the new construction of the pedestrian and cycle path on the B 26 Darmstadt Street by the State Building Office Aschaffenburg are just a few examples. These projects have improved safety and riding comfort along the main cycle routes, making Aschaffenburg a more inviting city for cyclists.

The city's efforts to promote bicycle traffic are not limited to infrastructure. An annual status report informs the city council in the planning and traffic committee about the progress of bicycle traffic promotion. Cooperation in the bicycle forum with representatives of society ensures transparency and participation on a broad basis.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the bicycle traffic concept, an image film was created. The film can be viewed at [link] and on the city's social media channels. The film showcases the city's commitment to cycling and the improvements made over the past decade.

Aschaffenburg is not alone in its commitment to promoting bicycle traffic. The city is a member of the AGFK, which consists of cities, municipalities, and districts. More than 70 members of the AGFK have already been awarded the title "Bicycle-Friendly Municipality".

The overall process of designing a bicycle-friendly city is a long-term task and not yet completed. The implementation of the 2015 bicycle traffic concept is gradually closing the gaps in the cycle route network. The city of Aschaffenburg continues to work towards its goal of becoming an even more bike-friendly city in the future.

The certificate from State Minister Bernreiter was presented to Mayor Herzing during the event by Holger Schmidt, deputy managing director of the AGFK. The minister's name, however, was not available in the search results. Regardless, the recognition from the AGFK is a testament to Aschaffenburg's commitment to promoting bicycle traffic and creating a more sustainable city.
