Betfred revives £2m Triple Crown bonus for 2026 British Classics
Betfred has renewed its sponsorship of all five British Classics for 2026, including the Guineas Festival, Epsom Oaks and Derby, and St Leger Stakes. The betting company has also brought back its £2 million Triple Crown bonus, aiming to reward any horse that wins the 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby, and St Leger Stakes in a single season.
The 2026 flat racing season kicks off with the Guineas Festival at Newmarket. Betfred’s £2 million bonus will be available to any horse that can secure victories in the three key races: the 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby, and the St Leger Stakes. Achieving this feat is rare—only 15 horses have ever won the Triple Crown, with Nijinsky being the last to do so in 1970.
This year’s contenders include horses trained by leading figures like Aidan O’Brien and Charlie Appleby. Their stables have produced strong performers in recent seasons, raising hopes for a potential Triple Crown challenge. Betfred’s decision comes at a time when the UK gambling industry faces financial pressures. A 40% Remote Gaming Duty (RGD) has squeezed margins, leading some operators to cut marketing teams and withdraw sponsorships. Despite this, Betfred’s founder, Fred Done, has kept the company’s commitment to racing sponsorship intact. The firm, which operates around 1,350 retail betting shops and an online platform, reports an annual turnover of around £10 billion.
The reinstated £2 million bonus highlights Betfred’s ongoing support for British racing. With the 2026 season now underway, attention will turn to whether any horse can claim the Triple Crown for the first time in over 50 years. The company’s sponsorship ensures the Classics remain a focal point of the racing calendar.
