Berlin's Feminist Uprising: 30,000 March for Workers' Rights and Safety
Berlin saw its largest feminist demonstration in years on March 8, 2026. Up to 30,000 people gathered in Kreuzberg for a union-led march under the slogan Feminist, Solidary, Unionized. The rally kicked off on Oranienstraße, with organisers urging participants to avoid clogging nearby side streets as they set off.
The demonstration was put together by a broad alliance of trade unions, women's centres, and activist groups. Verdi, GEW, and the DGB—represented by Katja Karger—joined forces with initiatives like Omas for Future and the 'Ad-Free' and 'Car-Free' referendum campaigns. These groups collected signatures and handed out literature as the crowd moved through the city.
Onstage, speakers included workers from Vivantes hospital subsidiaries and staff from domestic violence shelters. Their speeches focused on the daily struggles of working women, the risk of losing the eight-hour workday, and the fight against sexualised violence. One speaker declared they would defend union rights with every ounce of strength—a pledge met with loud, sustained applause.
The march drew a diverse mix of participants. Young women in purple, leftist organisers, and activists from various campaigns filled the streets. Alongside the main event, smaller gatherings took place in the afternoon, such as the Purple Ride by lesbian and left-wing women's groups and Feminism Unlimited, led by left-radical collectives. Signs and chants throughout the day called for stronger protections for workers and an end to gender-based violence.
The demonstration marked Berlin's first major feminist day of action in recent years. With 20,000 to 30,000 attendees, it highlighted concerns over labour rights, workplace equality, and safety from domestic violence. Media reports later emphasised the central role of unions and grassroots networks in mobilising the crowd.
