Berlin Roma Group Demands Apology After Politician’s Slur Sparks Outrage

Amaro Foro, a Berlin-based Roma self-organization, has demanded a public apology from CDU lawmaker Timur Husein after he used a slur against Elif Eralp, the Left Party’s top candidate. The group, founded 15 years ago, has long campaigned against systemic discrimination and rising anti-Roma sentiment in Germany. Their call comes as concerns grow over worsening racism and unequal treatment of Roma communities.

Amaro Foro began in 2009 as an activist-driven group, responding to the arrival of many Bulgarian and Romanian families in Berlin. These families struggled with housing shortages and a lack of support services. To address these issues, the organization set up a drop-in center in 2010, offering initial consultations and referrals to further help. That same year, they also launched the Mobile Advisory Center for Migrant Workers and Roma.

The incident involving Husein has reignited debates over systemic discrimination against Roma in Germany. Amaro Foro continues to push for policy changes, including fairer treatment in housing and employment. Their demand for an apology reflects broader concerns about rising hostility towards Roma communities across the country.
