Berlin protests spotlight global struggles—but Iran’s uprising is ignored

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Berlin this week to demand democracy and freedom in various countries. The demonstrations at Brandenburg Gate and elsewhere highlighted global struggles, with chants for Palestine, Cuba, and Venezuela. Yet, despite Iran's ongoing violent crackdown, the country's protests received little focus at the events.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, crowds filled Berlin's streets, waving flags and shouting slogans like Woman – Life – Freedom and Down with the dictatorship. Organisers claimed up to 2,000 people joined the largest rally, showing solidarity with international causes. The Palestinian flag was widely displayed, and many marched under Free Gaza—though few added from Hamas.

The Iranian regime's brutal response to protests—live ammunition, mass arrests, and executions—has killed thousands since late 2025. Yet, despite these atrocities, the Berlin demonstrations barely addressed Iran's crisis. While some left-wing groups in Germany have recently backed Iranian protesters under the slogan Neither Islamists Nor the Shah, broader solidarity remains limited.

Critics argue the left’s hesitation stems from geopolitical concerns and fear of alienating Iran-aligned supporters. Meanwhile, the regime’s human rights abuses—mass executions, minority persecution—are well-documented but often overlooked. A potential collapse of Iran’s government could reshape regional dynamics, easing tensions with Israel and granting neighbouring states more autonomy.

The Berlin protests underscored a divide in left-wing activism. While global solidarity was the theme, Iran's uprising—one of the deadliest in recent years—was sidelined. For many, the left’s willingness to support Iranian protesters may now test its commitment to universal human rights and emancipation.
