Beloved Black-owned Sip & Sonder coffee shop closes its Inglewood flagship

Sip & Sonder, a beloved Black-owned coffee shop in Inglewood, will close its flagship location for good this Wednesday. The news came as a shock to regulars, who have long seen the café as a cultural hub for the community. Founded in 2018, it quickly became known for its house-roasted espresso and vibrant events.

The closure was announced on Friday, leaving many locals disappointed. Customers took to social media to share memories of the space, from quiet mornings with coffee to lively evenings filled with music and conversation. Rising rent, increasing labour costs, and slower consumer spending made it too difficult to keep the brick-and-mortar shop running.

Sip & Sonder was more than just a coffee shop. It hosted artist residencies, coffee education workshops, and pitch competitions for Black entrepreneurs. Jazz nights drew crowds, with legendary musician Stevie Wonder even making appearances. The menu also reflected Black culture, featuring signature drinks like the Cardi Rose latte, named after hip-hop artist Cardi B. Despite the closure, the brand isn't disappearing entirely. The coffee kiosk outside the Music Center in downtown L.A. will stay open, and beans remain available for purchase online. Co-founder Amanda-Jane Thomas has expressed hope for keeping Sip & Sonder's presence alive in Inglewood and South L.A. She is now exploring new ways to sustain the business in the area.

The flagship location will shut its doors after years of serving as a gathering place for the community. While the physical shop is closing, the brand's online sales and downtown kiosk will continue. Thomas remains focused on finding solutions to keep Sip & Sonder connected to Inglewood.
