Bayern's THW Commemorates 75 Years of Public Protection: A Look Back at a Stirring History of THW Bayern's Service to the People.

In the heart of Germany, the Technical Relief Organization of the Federal Republic of Germany (THW) in Bavaria celebrates its 75th anniversary. Established on August 22, 1950, the THW has grown from a small group of volunteers to a formidable force of over 16,000 dedicated individuals who selflessly offer their time to protect the population in Bavaria.

The THW was originally founded with the task of protecting the population from the effects of war and clearing up the aftermath of World War II. Since then, it has continually adapted as global political situations changed, expanding its competencies to meet the challenges of the modern world.

One of the THW's first international missions was in 1953, when it provided aid during a storm surge in the Netherlands. Over the years, the THW has been deployed worldwide on behalf of the federal government, including within the framework of the European Union's civil protection mechanism and on behalf of UN organizations.

In recent years, the THW has played a crucial role in responding to natural disasters, both in Germany and abroad. Bavarian THW members were on site to combat the damage caused by the flood in the Ahr valley in 2021, and they provided technical assistance abroad following a severe earthquake in Turkey in 2023. Last year, THW Bavaria volunteers worked tirelessly during the flooding caused by the low pressure system "Orinoco" in southern Bavaria.

The THW's civil defense capabilities have regained significance due to Russia's aggressive war on Ukraine. In response, the THW has focused on measures to react to the effects of climate change and has expanded its competencies in emergency supply and emergency repair. The THW has so far procured aid goods worth over 138 million euros on behalf of the federal government for Ukraine, including vehicles, construction machinery, and power generators.

The Bavarian State Chancellery is hosting a reception today for around 350 THW members to honour their service and dedication. Six volunteer personnel from the local associations of Bayreuth, Selb, Ingolstadt, Aschaffenburg, Freising, and Simbach have been members of THW Bavaria for over 70 years, a testament to their unwavering commitment to the organization.

The THW is a sought-after supporter for fire departments, police, aid organizations, and others due to its expertise and diverse experiences. As a federal voluntary emergency service, the THW's work in civil protection relies on the over 80,000 volunteers nationwide who form the basis for its operations.
