"Baroque Castle Open Day" at Proschwitz, Meissen, scheduled for July 28, 2024
On the 28th of July, Schloss Proschwitz near Meißen will open its doors to visitors, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and entertainment. The address for navigation is 01662 Meißen OT Proschwitz, Heiliger Grund 2.
The castle, privately owned by the Prince zu Lippe family until 1945, has been extensively restored since 1990. Visitors can explore the castle complex, built between 1701 and 1704, and marvel at its architectural beauty.
For those with a keen interest in avian displays, bird of prey demonstrations will take place at 12 pm and 2 pm. Between these performances, the falconer will bring a large bird into the castle courtyard, providing an up-close and personal encounter with these majestic creatures.
Music lovers will not be disappointed either. Piano music performances by Dr. Olena Khoruzha will fill the air, playing compositions by Robert Schumann and Frédéric Chopin at 11 am, 12 pm, and 2 pm.
A wine, antique, and garden market will take place from 10 am to 6 pm, offering art, antiques, plants, gardening tools, and various rarities for sale. Interested traders can register for the event at www.flohmarkt-sachsen.de. Experts will also be on-site to appraise any rarities you may find.
For wine enthusiasts, Proschwitzer wines and sparkling wines, as well as various culinary specialties, will be available for purchase. The castle vinothek is also open for visitors.
The castle park, an English landscape garden, covers 5 hectares and was laid out in the style of the early 18th century. The park offers a beautiful view of the vineyards, Burg Meißen, and the Elbe valley. Parking is available at the vineyard and above the castle. Visitors are advised to drive past the castle a bit to reach the parking lot.
Wine hikes "Stories of Saxon and Meissen Wine" will also be held on the 28th of July. Registration for these hikes is required.
Children under 12 years old are free, and admission to the event is €4, with a discount for SZ-Card holders at €3.
