Barclays Leads in Data Privacy Grievances
In a recent investigation by consumer rights publisher Which? Money, it was revealed that the UK's eight major banks received a total of 272 valid complaints about non-compliance with subject access requests, as regulated by data protection principles.
The investigation, detailed in the June issue of Which? Money, found that Lloyds TSB had the highest number of complaints assessed as unlikely to be in compliance, with 114 complaints during the same period. Barclays Bank was not far behind, with 116 complaints assessed in the same category.
The UK's data protection watchdog, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), expressed concern over the handling of customer data by financial institutions, as revealed by the numbers. The ICO emphasized the potential serious effects of mishandling financial information on individuals' lives.
Barclays Bank, in response, has stated its commitment to protecting customer data and promised to alert the ICO, the Financial Services Authority (FSA), and customers in case of a substantial data breach. The bank also aims to minimize the risk in case of a data breach.
The most common type of complaint against the UK's eight major banks was related to subject access requests, with 272 valid complaints for non-compliance with the act. The second most frequent cause for complaint was "inaccurate data".
Besides Barclays and Lloyds TSB, the organization with the most valid complaints submitted to the ICO regarding improper use of personal data during the year from August 2009 to August 2010 was the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Barclays Bank prioritizes the security of customers' money and personal information, and has promised to take all necessary measures to ensure compliance with data protection principles. The bank also highlighted the importance of proper management and respect for customers' data protection rights.
The ICO has emphasized the need for financial institutions to respect and protect customer data, and has encouraged customers to report any instances of non-compliance with data protection principles to the ICO.
