Badminton World Championship Winners Announced: Shi Claims Victory Over Kunlavut, Yamaguchi Rules Women's Division
Shi Wins First World Championships Crown in Paris, Chen Suffers Heartbreaking Loss
In a thrilling conclusion to the 2025 Badminton World Championships in Paris, China's Shi Yuqi emerged victorious, claiming his first world championships crown. Meanwhile, Chen Yufei, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist, suffered a heartbreaking loss in the women's final.
Shi, the fourth seed, took an 11-9 lead into the interval in the championship game. His opponent, Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand, who secured silver for the second consecutive year, led in the first game but lost it to Shi due to a misjudged lobbed serve. Shi eventually won the match after Kunlavut hit long on match point.
Chen, on the other hand, had a challenging tournament. She suffered a nasty-looking ankle twist early in the second game of the semi-final. Despite receiving treatment on the court, she appeared hampered in her movement during the final due to her ankle injury. Despite this, she put up a valiant effort against the underdog Yamaguchi.
Yamaguchi, who won the women's championship in 2025, took full advantage of Chen's hampered movement in the opening game of the final. Chen, who had taken eight painkillers before receiving her silver medal, fought back in the second game but was unable to overcome Yamaguchi's advantage.
In the mixed doubles final, Malaysian fourth seeds Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei claimed victory, while China took revenge in the women's doubles final, beating Malaysian representatives Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan. The bronze medal in women's doubles was won by Tan and Muralitharan from Malaysia.
Yamaguchi found the victory to have a different kind of value due to her underdog status and lack of results this year. Chen, on the other hand, lost her second world final to Yamaguchi, three years after their first encounter in Tokyo. Shi, however, was able to break his 'worlds hoodoo' after a challenging tournament.
In the semi-final match, Chen defeated top seed and reigning champion An Se-young of South Korea. Despite her injury, she showed great determination and skill, securing her place in the final. However, it was not to be her day as she was unable to overcome the determined Yamaguchi.
Shi's victory in Paris marks a significant milestone in his career, and he will no doubt be looking forward to defending his title in future tournaments. Meanwhile, Chen will be hoping to recover from her ankle injury and return to form in time for the next competition.
