Autumn Brings a New Reflection: Interview Preview for the Upcoming Rent Mirror

The University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald is set to introduce a qualified rent index in March 2026, aiming to increase transparency and fairness in the local housing market.

The rent index will be based on data collected from randomly selected tenants and landlords during the data collection phase, which will take place from September to October 2025. A broad data base is necessary, especially from private landlords, to ensure the index accurately reflects the rental conditions in Greifswald.

Participation in the survey is essential to ensure the rent index is realistic and reliable. Private landlords are particularly important in the creation process of the qualified rent index, and their participation will take place during the collection phase of the rent data for the rent index.

The survey will include questions about rental agreements, year of construction, apartment size, equipment, and type of heating. Participants are legally required to provide this information, as the Rent Index Reform Act serves as the legal basis for this obligation.

In the future, the rent index will be legally binding. Non-participation or false statements constitute an administrative offense, with fines of up to 5,000 euros.

For any questions or queries regarding the rent index, please contact the Department of Geoinformation and Surveying at Phone: 03834 8536-4173 or Email: Mietspiegel@ourwebsite.

The rent index is a significant step towards a more transparent and fair housing market in Greifswald, and the city encourages all landlords and tenants to participate in the survey to ensure the index accurately reflects the rental market in the city.
