Autonomous Robot Debuted in China for Cross-Pollination in Hybrid Environments
China Unveils World's First AI-Powered Breeding Robot
In a groundbreaking development, Chinese scientists have introduced the world to GEAIR, the world's first AI-driven breeding robot. This robot, a fusion of artificial intelligence and biotechnology, is set to revolutionise the breeding industry and usher in a new era of AI and biotechnology.
GEAIR was developed by Geair Robotics and led by Xu Cao, a researcher from the Institute of Genetics and Development Biology, CAS. The robot's performance was showcased in a greenhouse exercise where it accurately identified a flower and extended its arm to complete the hybrid pollination process with inch-perfect precision.
The study detailing GEAIR's capabilities was published in the prestigious journal Cell by the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGBD) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Xu Cao discussed the robot's impact, stating that it marks a significant shift towards precision agriculture, aided by AI and robots.
GEAIR is designed to cruise autonomously and carry out cross-pollination. Its application in the breeding sector promises reduced breeding costs, short breeding cycles, and improved breeding efficiency. The robot was used to develop a male-sterile soybean system, potentially boosting China's soybean hybrid breeding efforts.
The study also highlights the application prospects of 'AI for science' in the sector of biological breeding. Xu Cao emphasised that this development could help China take the lead in creating a fully autonomous and intelligent breeding robot. The combination of AI, biotechnology, and robotics has been used to build an "intelligent robotic breeding factory."
The impact of GEAIR could extend beyond the breeding industry. It could potentially enhance crop yields, reduce costs, and promote sustainable practices in agriculture. This robot's performance is poised to usher in a new era of precision agriculture, aided by AI and robots.
