Automaker Volkswagen will label their future electric vehicles under the banner of their existing model lineups.
Volkswagen is making a significant shift in its approach to automobile production, with a renewed focus on customer feedback and a blend of digital and physical control elements. This new emphasis is evident in the higher quality, intuitive operating concepts, and advanced technologies found in their latest models.
One such model is the ID. Polo, set to debut in September at the IAA Mobility in Munich, still camouflaged. The ID. Polo combines electric mobility with qualities such as quality, safety, and the democratization of innovations, making electric mobility not only progressive but also approachable and personal.
In 2026, the ID. Polo GTI will become a production model, offering plenty of dynamics and driving fun. Meanwhile, the future of the ID.3 is yet to be determined, but the next Golf is set to be an electric vehicle, potentially offered as the ID. Golf starting from 2027. Volkswagen plans to replace the ID.3 name with the traditional Golf name to link tradition with electromobility.
Thomas SchΓ€fer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, stated that their model names stand for qualities such as quality, timeless design, and technology for all. This sentiment is echoed by Martin Sander, member of the Volkswagen brand board of management, who believes that cars often accompany people for many years, shaping memories and life stages.
Volkswagen introduced the naming convention for the ID. family in 2018, with the independent, fully electric product range designated as the ID. series. The company plans to transfer more established names to their electric portfolio with each new model generation. Rumors suggest that the ID.7 could later be renamed the ID. Passat, while the ID. up!, initially announced as the ID.1, could launch in 2027.
The production version of the ID. Cross Concept, named ID. Cross, is scheduled to launch at the end of 2026 as an electric counterpart to the T-Cross. Volkswagen is emphasizing affordability with their new electric vehicles, such as the ID. Polo and ID. Cross.
Volkswagen's new ID. Polo concept car will be known as the ID. Polo in production. The ID.7, available as a sedan and wagon, is the largest model in the ID. series. The company will carry their well-known names into the future, marking a partial departure from the existing ID. family's nomenclature.
In addition to these announcements, Volkswagen will soon reveal the study of an electric compact SUV: the new ID. Cross Concept. All vehicles with traditional powertrains will continue under their current names. Stay tuned for more updates on Volkswagen's exciting electrification journey!
