Rochester Medical Center Leads in Pediatric Urology
The University of Rochester Medical Center's Department of Urology has established itself as a leading centre for paediatric urological care in Upstate New York. The practice, spearheaded by Dr. Ronald Rabinowitz, has garnered numerous referrals from surrounding areas such as Buffalo, Syracuse, Watertown, Ithaca, and northern Pennsylvania due to Dr. Rabinowitz's leadership in robotic pediatric urologic surgery.
Dr. Rabinowitz's extensive background in paediatric urology began in 1975 when he accepted two fellowships in pediatric urology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. His career had a strong connection to David Williams, the world's first full-time pediatric urologist.
The practice at the Medical Center specialises in treating children exclusively and providing comprehensive care for a broad spectrum of urologic diseases. They offer a wide range of conditions and treatments, including neurogenic bladder, voiding dysfunction, vesicoureteral reflux, prenatal hydronephrosis, testicular torsion, varicoceles, hypospadias, meatal stenosis, penile deformities, kidney stones, kidney abnormalities, urinary tract infections, and pediatric urologic cancer.
One of the key factors contributing to the practice's success is the use of robotic surgery by Dr. Jimena Cubillos. This innovative approach allows for kidney access through small incisions, resulting in faster recovery times. Dr. Cubillos is an expert in minimally invasive, laparoscopic, and robotic pediatric urology at the practice.
The practice also employs video urodynamics and biofeedback therapy to improve treatment and teach children how to relax pelvic muscles to void more effectively. They have expanded in-office circumcisions for infants from newborns to age 5 or 6 months, reducing the need for general anesthesia.
Dr. Rabinowitz continues to educate the next generation of urologists, believing that understanding the history of urology makes them better educated. He has trained over a hundred urology residents and medical students, authored or co-authored more than 200 scientific articles and textbook chapters, and serves as historian for the American Urological Association.
The focus of the Medical Center's Department of Urology, as stated by Dr. Jean Joseph, M.D., M.B.A., is to provide the best possible urological care for children. They work closely with physicians at the Wilmot Cancer Center, ensuring comprehensive care for their patients.
The practice's success can be traced back to Dr. Rabinowitz's early life. Growing up near Pittsburgh's steel mills, he suffered from severe asthma. Spending time in a children's hospital as a young boy sparked his interest in becoming a doctor. A tennis match was responsible for bringing him to Rochester 45 years ago, where his expertise was a perfect match for the needs of children in the region, and a new pediatric urology practice was born at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
