Authorities confirm over 29,000 cases of rabid animals and thousands of instances of false parking violations uncovered during a recent police sweep.
In August 20XX, the Hamburg Police conducted a thorough traffic safety campaign under the banner of "Mobile. But safe!". The focus of the campaign was on speed, turning, and reversing, which are common causes of accidents.
During the campaign, nearly 3,400 vehicles and around 2,300 people were inspected. The police checked licenses, inspected technical defects, breathalyzed traffic participants, and measured speed. The results revealed a significant number of traffic offenses, with approximately 35,600 infractions recorded. However, the number of criminal offenses was relatively low, with 118 cases detected.
One of the lesser common offenses observed was among e-scooter users. In 270 cases, users were found to be turning or reversing improperly, while ignoring red lights occurred in 144 cases and using a mobile phone while driving in 120 cases. E-scooter users were also found to be in violation of parking restrictions in 12 cases, and riding two on one scooter in 21 cases. Moreover, three e-scooter rides were under the influence of alcohol, and one under the influence of drugs, relevant in terms of criminal law.
Among cyclists, 83 were found to be riding on the sidewalk, 55 rode against traffic, and 23 ignored red lights. However, no criminal offenses by cyclists were registered in August.
Speeding was a major problem, with around 27,000 speed limit violations registered. Parking violations were also common, with over 7,200 offenses detected. Interestingly, pedestrians committed only one traffic offense - a red light violation.
In a concerning trend, it was found that every seventh e-scooter accident is related to alcohol. Many road users underestimate their driving ability after consuming alcohol or drugs, a factor that was reflected in the three e-scooter rides and ten drivers found under the influence of drugs, and nine under the influence of alcohol.
For September, the Hamburg Police plans to focus on "Alcohol and Drugs" as well as "unprotected road users". The topic of the upcoming traffic safety campaign in September is not specified. The police also made numerous defect reports and ordered 25 blood tests in September.
