Authorities apprehend a 27-year-old individual in western Georgia, accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Georgian Interior Ministry confirmed the arrest of a 27-year-old man in the western region of Guria, Georgia. The man, identified as Giorgi K., is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl.
According to the preliminary investigation, the incident occurred in August 2025. After the alleged crime, the suspect is said to have fled the scene, but was later detained.
The crime in question is rape, and if found guilty, Giorgi K. faces up to 20 years or life imprisonment. It is worth noting that at the time of the latest crime, the man was under a suspended sentence for an unspecified offense.
The victim, a 14-year-old girl, is the latest in a concerning trend of sexual violence against children in Georgia. In an interview with RFE/RL in 2024, Natia Merebashvili, then-Deputy Prosecutor General, noted that such cases in Georgia are often characterised by latency and difficulty of detection.
In a disturbing statistic, data shared by the Prosecutor General's Office with RFE/RL indicates that 260 child victims of sexual offences were reported from 2022-2023. However, the accuracy of this data is not guaranteed.
The Georgian Interior Ministry has not released further details about the case at this time. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued efforts to address and prevent such crimes against children in Georgia.
