Austrian World Cup Fans Face Tighter U.S. Travel Rules for 2026

Austrian football fans planning to attend the 2026 World Cup in the U.S. face new travel requirements. The U.S. Embassy in Vienna has reminded supporters to secure an ESTA or visa before the tournament. With 78 of 104 matches held in America, officials expect high demand for travel documents.

Recent reports of stricter border checks, including smartphone searches and detentions, have added to travellers' concerns. Authorities stress the importance of accurate applications and thorough preparation to avoid delays or entry refusals.

Austrians visiting the U.S. for business or tourism can stay for up to 90 days without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program. However, they must first obtain an ESTA, which costs €40. The U.S. Embassy has urged World Cup attendees to apply early, especially first-time travellers, as ESTA rejections may require a full visa application.

Certain travellers must apply for a visa instead of an ESTA. This includes those who have visited Cuba, Iran, or Iraq since 2011, as well as dual nationals from specific countries. World Cup ticket holders will receive priority for visa appointments, but delays remain possible. U.S. border officials have broad powers to inspect electronic devices and question arrivals. Providing false information on an ESTA or visa can result in entry denial, detention, or even a future travel ban. To minimise risks, travellers are advised to carry printed copies of essential documents, such as proof of accommodation, return tickets, and itineraries. The U.S. Embassy congratulated Austria's national team on qualifying for the tournament. President Trump has stated that the event will highlight America's beauty and strength, with matches spread across multiple host cities.

Austrian fans must complete travel authorisations well before the World Cup to avoid last-minute issues. Those with past travel to restricted countries or dual citizenship will need a visa. Officials warn that incorrect applications or missing documents could lead to entry problems or deportation. The embassy's guidance aims to prevent complications, ensuring supporters can focus on the tournament instead of border delays.
