Austrian Motorways Facing Potential Traffic Congestion Crisis
In the final stretch of the holiday season, traffic congestion is causing delays across several European routes and key Austrian highways. Here's a summary of the current traffic situations:
In Austria
- Traffic congestion is ongoing on the A10 (Tauern Autobahn) in tunnel sections, toll stations, and the Salzburg area. Delays can also be expected on the A93 at Kufstein and the A8 at Suben.
- The A9 (Pyhrn Autobahn) is affected, with congestion at St. Michael, Gleinalm, and Bosruck Tunnels. The B151 (Atterseestraße) and B152 (Seeleitenstraße) are experiencing traffic congestion throughout their entire routes.
- On the B169 (Zillertalstraße), delays are occurring between Mayrhofen and Inntal. Similarly, congestion is present on the B177 (Seefelder Straße) between Scharnitz and Zirl, and the B83 (Kärntner Straße) in the Wörthersee area.
- Before the Karawankentunnel on the A11 (Karawanken Autobahn), traffic congestion is being reported.
- The A12 (Inntal Autobahn) is affected in the Innsbruck area and at the border Kufstein/Kiefersfelden.
- Traffic congestion is occurring on the B178 (Loferer Straße) between Söll and St. Johann in Tirol, and on the B179 (Fernpassstraße) between Reutte and Grenztunnel Vils/Füssen.
- The B145 (Salzkammergutstraße) is experiencing congestion between Gmunden and Bad Aussee.
In Germany
- Delays are expected on the A8 at Suben and on the A93 at Kufstein, upon exiting to Germany.
- Around the Wörthersee in Carinthia, streets will be closed as part of "Kärnten Läuft", including the Velden-Ost highway exit on the A2.
Special Events
- The Ötztaler Radmarathon on Sunday will result in closures on the route from Sölden via the Timmelsjoch to Sterzing.
- The Ironman 70.3 Zell am See-Kaprun will bring restrictions on the Pinzgauer Straße (B311) and the Hochkönig Straße (B164).
- At the end of August in Austria, several medieval-themed events attract additional traffic: the "Mittelaltertreiben zu Liesing" on August 23-24 in Liesing, Vienna, and the "Gaudium zur Purg" from August 29-31 in the Schlosspark Purgstall area of Lower Austria.
School Holidays
- Schoolchildren in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg still have two more holiday weeks ahead.
International Travel
- Delays are expected in international traffic at the Karawankentunnel (A11), the Spielfeld/Sentilj border crossing (Slovenia), and Nickelsdorf/Hegyeshalom (Hungary).
As many car travelers are starting their journeys now due to the approaching end of the holiday season in the aforementioned regions, it's essential to plan ahead and allow extra travel time to reach your destination. The Gartenbaumesse Tulln is attracting tens of thousands of visitors until Monday, with delays expected on the Donauufer Autobahn (A22) and the Stockerauer Schnellstraße (S5) in Lower Austria.
