Austrian Casino Corporation seeks Austrian gambling authorizations; potential persistence of monopolistic gambling structure.

In the Austrian gambling landscape, Casinos Austria AG, the operator of the Austrian lottery and the legal online casino platform win2day, has applied for an extension of its concessions, with a deadline for renewal set for 2027.

The company, which also operates stationary video slots under the brand name WINWIN, contributed a direct gross value added of 632.3 million euros to the Austrian economy in 2022, pushing the total value created by Casinos Austria AG beyond the 1 billion euro mark.

Six casinos in rural tourist regions, operated by Casinos Austria AG, have licenses valid until 2030. The application process for these licenses is already underway. In major Austrian cities, six casinos operated by the company also require renewal by 2027.

The coalition partners have been unable to reach an agreement on changing the licensing process, ensuring that the current system with one concessionaire per license will continue. However, it remains uncertain if other companies are working to secure individual or multiple concessions to challenge Casinos Austria's monopoly in Austria.

Erwin van Lambaart, CEO of Casinos Austria AG, has presented several arguments for why the company should continue to hold the concessions, emphasising its contributions to job creation, sports support, and social projects.

The current status of competition for Casinos Austria AG’s concession extensions is not definitive as of August 2025. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, official Austrian regulatory bodies for gambling or the company’s latest press releases would be the primary sources to consult.

It is worth noting that in other regions, such as Lower Saxony, Casinos Austria has faced competition, with the Merkur Group winning the licensing process there. The ongoing licensing process in Austria is expected to shed more light on the competitive landscape in the near future.

For a broader perspective, the regulatory environment of Austria’s gambling market and the historical context of Casinos Austria AG’s concessions can provide valuable insights. However, these topics are beyond the scope of this article.
