In a significant meeting held in Bern, Switzerland, Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern and Swiss Federal President Karin Keller-Sutter came together to reinforce the close relationship between their nations.

Austria considers Switzerland as its third-most important tourism market, with thousands of Austrians visiting the Alpine country each year. Moreover, Switzerland ranks as Austria's fifth-largest trading partner, underscoring the economic interdependence between the two nations.

During the meeting, the leaders discussed a range of topics that impact both countries, including transport, environmental protection, and regional development. They also exchanged views on current issues such as the prospects for the Western Balkans and global developments that affect both Austria and Switzerland.

One of the key points of discussion was the cooperation on flood protection, specifically the "Rhesi" project. The leaders expressed their support for the project and emphasised the importance of joint efforts in addressing such challenges.

The importance of remaining closely coordinated with partners, especially neighbours, was also emphasized by the Austrian head of government. This sentiment was echoed by President Keller-Sutter as they discussed the war and reconstruction in Ukraine.

The meeting aimed to ensure close cooperation between Austria and Switzerland, with the leaders reaffirming their commitment to maintaining strong ties. Approximately 9,000 Austrians commute across the border with Switzerland each day, and around 70,000 Austrians live in the country, further highlighting the close interconnection between the two nations.

Foreign policy was highlighted as affecting daily lives, supply security, domestic jobs, and safety. The leaders recognised the importance of working together to address these issues and ensure the well-being of their citizens.

In a statement, Chancellor Kern noted the significance of these matters during his visit to Switzerland and expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he received. The meeting between the leaders in 2025 marked a crucial step forward in strengthening the relationship between Austria and Switzerland.
