Australian Vine clinches victory in Vuelta's sixth stage
Vuelta a España Shaken Up by Jay Vine's Solo Victory
The Vuelta a España witnessed a significant shake-up in the overall standings on the first real mountain stage of the race. Australian Jay Vine of UAE Team Emirates-XRG clinched a thrilling solo victory in stage six, further extending his lead in the mountains classification.
The 10-man breakaway group, which included Vine, made their move on the first ascent, Collada de Sentigosa. Vine, with his local knowledge of the roads, launched a solo attack in the final 20km to secure the win. He was first over the summit of Collada de Toses, a category 1 climb, with his companions.
Torstein Traeen of Norway also had an impressive ride, finishing second in stage six. This result was enough to move him to the top of the general classification, displacing race favourite Jonas Vingegaard. Vingegaard dropped from first to fifth place, 2 minutes, 33 seconds behind Traeen.
Italy's Lorenzo Fortunato of XDS Astana finished third in the stage, while Bruno Armirail, a Frenchman, came in fourth. Armirail is currently second in the general classification, 31 seconds behind Traeen.
Four riders from the group that escaped the peloton overtook Vingegaard in the overall standings, adding to the drama of the day's racing. The peloton trailed by more than 6 minutes with 40km left to race, but they were unable to catch the breakaway group before the finish.
This victory marks Vine's second stage win in the Vuelta a España, and it comes three years after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. The stage took place from Olot, Spain, to Pal in Andorra, with the winner hailing from Andorra himself.
The Vuelta a España continues to provide exciting racing, with the overall standings now wide open. The next stage promises to be just as challenging, as the riders tackle more gruelling climbs in their quest for victory.
