Australian manhunt for an armed suspect enters its fifth day as weather worsens
In the town of Porepunkah, about 300 kilometers northeast of Melbourne, Australian police are on a manhunt for 56-year-old Dezi Freeman. The search began on Tuesday after Freeman, previously known as Desmond Filby, is alleged to have shot dead two officers and injured another from the sexual offenses and child investigation team.
According to reports, Freeman is a self-proclaimed sovereign citizen suspected to be linked to a sovereign citizen sub-group. He is believed to regard the government as illegitimate, a claim Australian media have corroborated. Freeman is also believed to possess expert bushcraft skills and multiple powerful firearms, making the search a challenging endeavour.
The search area, which includes the town of Porepunkah, is currently experiencing challenging conditions of cold, wind, and snow, as well as a severe weather warning. A very cold night is on the way for the area, with a minimum temperature of 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) forecast for Porepunkah on Sunday.
Despite the difficult weather conditions, the search for Freeman continues. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan visited nearby Wangaratta police station to pay tribute to the two slain officers. "The loss of these officers is a tragedy for their families, their colleagues, and the entire community," Allan said.
The possibility of black ice on roads is a concern in the region due to the cold weather. Motorists are advised to drive with caution and to keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many expressing their condolences to the families of the slain officers. The police are urging anyone with information regarding Freeman's whereabouts to come forward. The manhunt continues.
