Attorney General of New Mexico orders staff to resurrect two criminal cases earlier dropped by the District Attorney of Gallup
In a recent development, New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez has directed prosecutors in his office to take over two high-profile criminal cases that were previously being handled by the McKinley County district attorney. The cases in question are a 2023 rape case and a 2022 murder case.
The decision to transfer these cases comes after the Gallup-based District Attorney, Bernadine Martin, dismissed both cases due to conflicts of interest. However, no outside prosecutor was referred to in the dismissals, and the reason for not transferring the cases to an outside district attorney's office remains undisclosed.
Contrary to some speculation, an email sent out recently was not related to the dismissals, the ongoing investigation by the New Mexico Attorney General's office, or the referral of the cases to an outside prosecutor. The email was merely a confirmation of a list signup, and there was no error processing the request.
It's important to note that the email did not contain any advertisements and was not related to the actions of the New Mexico Attorney General's office or the District Attorney. The email was also not related to the status of the 2023 rape case or the 2022 murder case, which are currently under investigation by the New Mexico Attorney General's office.
The New Mexico Attorney General's office is now investigating both cases, and it remains to be seen how this will impact the ongoing investigations and potential prosecutions. The public will be kept informed as more information becomes available.
