Atletico Madrid draws against Alaves, as Simeone's quest for his initial La Liga victory persists

In a closely contested match at Estadio de Mendizorroza, Atletico Madrid and Alaves ended in a 1-1 draw in the 2025-26 LaLiga season. The goal scorers for the respective teams were Giuliano Simeone for Atletico Madrid and Carlos Vicente for Alaves, who found the back of the net from a penalty kick.

The encounter began with Atletico slightly edging the expected goals (xG) battle, registering a tally of 1.09 from their 15 attempts. However, they failed to score for the remainder of the first half, despite opportunities from David Hancko and Clement Lenglet.

Atletico's manager, Diego Simeone, called for calm from the supporters ahead of kick-off, but the team's winless start in the league continued. Simeone has started a season at Atletico without winning any of his first three league games for the first time.

Alaves, on the other hand, registered a tally of 0.92 from their five shots in the xG battle. The equaliser came in the 13th minute after Nahuel Tenaglia was fouled by Alexander Sorloth, leading to a penalty. Vicente converted the spot-kick to level the score.

Atletico Madrid had a late opportunity to win the match but failed to convert. Antoine Griezmann came close, firing against the woodwork from a tight angle after an outswinging corner slipped through Antonio Sivera's grasp.

This result may cause concern for Atletico supporters after failing to win their first two league matches. Diego Simeone's side are currently 14th in the LaLiga standings. It is the first time Atletico has done so since 2009-10 under Abel Resino, when they failed to win in their first five (D3 L2).

Atletico Madrid under Abel Resino in the 2009-10 season had not won against FC Barcelona after five games. This is a stark contrast to their current situation, as they look to turn their fortunes around in the upcoming matches.
