Astronomical occurrences to be showcased at the planetarium during the lunar eclipse
On September 7, 2025, the skies over Halle (Saale) will be graced with a spectacular total lunar eclipse, and the Planetarium Halle is offering two special events for the public to witness this celestial spectacle.
The events, titled "Starry Hour Special: Live Total Lunar Eclipse", will take place at 6 PM and 7:30 PM. Tickets for these events can be purchased online at http://www.planetarium-halle.de or at the Planetarium box office during opening hours.
The total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth, Moon, and Sun align perfectly, with the Earth coming between the Sun and Moon. This alignment causes the Moon to enter the Earth's umbra, casting a shadow on its surface. During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon, in its full moon position, fully enters the Earth's umbra.
In Halle, the moon will rise at the eastern horizon around 7:45 PM during the total lunar eclipse, but initial observation may be challenging due to the bright twilight. The totality of the lunar eclipse will begin at 8:12 PM, reaching its maximum at this time. When fully immersed in the umbra, the Moon does not become completely dark but appears in a copper-red hue - a "Blood Moon".
Throughout the entire process, the Moon will only be at a low height above the eastern horizon in Halle. The partial phase, and thus the well-visible part of the eclipse, ends at 9:57 PM, but the Moon will still be visible during the exit from the umbra until shortly before 10 PM. The totality of the lunar eclipse will end at 8:53 PM, with the exit from the umbra continuing until shortly after 10 PM.
Don't miss this rare opportunity to witness this breathtaking celestial event. Visit the Planetarium Halle on September 7, 2025, and experience the beauty of a total lunar eclipse up close.
