Asparagus growers in Hessen are mostly content with the sales of the premium produce this season. "The revenue is reasonable, significant asparagus events like Mother's Day and Pentecost were heavily used by consumers," announced the Hessian Farmers' Union in a preliminary evaluation. Despite a lack of extended heatwave, the asparagus production hasn't peaked all at once. Consequently, prices have stayed steady, especially in direct sales.
Nevertheless, the staffing situation for the selling stands remains challenging, the farmers' union informed the German Press Agency. The rising costs, for instance, owing to the hike in minimum wage, create a strain for producers. "We cannot yet conclude if we managed to balance expenses in this asparagus season."
The 2023 harvest commenced during the first half of March, much earlier than in Germany's typical season. Asparagus traditionally starts in the second half of April and spans until June 24, the Feast of St. John.
Throughout recent years, asparagus cultivators have had to deal with various issues. High wage and energy expenses have escalated production costs. At the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, there were insufficient harvesters available to work the grueling tasks.
