ASEAN Recognizes Two of Our Cities for Their Commendable Environmental Sustainability Initiatives
In a ceremony held in Langkawi, Kedah State of Malaysia, the 6th ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable Cities (ESC) Awards and the 5th Certificate of Recognition (COR) were presented. The events were part of the 18th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment (AMME-18), which took place from September 2-4.
Hoa Lư, a city in Vietnam, was among 10 cities to receive the ESC Awards, recognizing its notable initiatives in sustainable tourism, environmental education, and awareness-raising in schools. The city's commitment to maintaining a green, clean, and liveable environment was highlighted at the ceremony.
Simultaneously, Hài Phòng was honoured at the 5th COR ceremony, receiving recognition in the category of "Biodiverse and Green Urban Areas". The city's efforts to conserve biodiversity and expand urban green spaces were acknowledged.
Malaysia's Acting Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Johari Abdul Ghani, expressed pride in the achievements of the awarded nations. He emphasized the need to share best practices and collaborate towards a greener future. The Malaysian Ministry also took the opportunity to congratulate Vietnam on having three national parks recognized as ASEAN Heritage Parks: Pù Mát National Park in Nghệ An Province, Đông Nai Culture and Nature Reserve in Đông Nai Province, and Xuân Thủy National Park in Ninh Bình Province.
The ESC Awards and the COR ceremony underscored the strong commitment of ASEAN cities to protecting the environment amid rapid urbanisation. The events served as a testament to the region's dedication to sustainable development and environmental conservation.
