In the vibrant world of anime art, a talented artist has recently unveiled a captivating piece that brings to life the English voice actress of Charlotte Linlin, also known as Big Mom, from the beloved series One Piece.

The commission, created by an unnamed artist, was a departure from the artist's usual style, having not been used in the past three years. Initial concerns about the commercial viability of the chosen style were quickly alleviated, as the final product was met with overwhelming approval from the client, Pam Dougherty.

The artwork was inspired by a thrilling scene within the anime where Big Mom embarks on a destructive rampage. To create this believable artwork, the artist employed a variety of techniques, starting with sketching quick, loose strokes in Clip Studio Paint. The initial sketch was then refined, with the artist lowering the opacity of the initial work, creating a new layer, and recreating the artwork with final lines and necessary details.

Once the greyscale version was complete, the artist added colour, subtly adjusting hue and saturation as needed. The use of the Smudge tool with a chalk brush was instrumental in suggesting strands within the hair, while the artist's meticulous attention to detail extended to the addition of small reflections within the eyes to help sell the surroundings.

The artist's mastery of contrast in shapes and movement, as well as the strategic use of curved lines versus straight lines, contributed significantly to the artwork's believability. The variation in depth of field provided some measure of scale to the environment, while shadows across the hand added a sense of expression to the fingers.

One of the most striking aspects of the artwork is the flow direction of smoke and cinders, which leads the viewer across the image towards Big Mom's expressive face. The use of both curved and straight lines in the hand adds to the tension of Big Mom's expression, further immersing the viewer in the scene.

After adding final details and merging the layers, the artist was relieved to find that much of their skill remained in muscle memory. The adaptation of what they'd learned from their regular commission style into the creation of this image was a testament to the artist's versatility and adaptability.

This stunning One Piece commission is a testament to the artist's skill and creativity, and serves as a fascinating exploration of the artistic process behind bringing an iconic anime character to life.
