Arts Ceding Ground Due to Self-Imposed Budgetary Restrictions? (Athena)
In a significant move aimed at promoting sustainability and inclusivity, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has launched an initiative to help places of worship share their heritage and welcome people from all backgrounds.
One of the key components of this initiative is the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme (LPWGS), which offers financial aid for repairs and alterations to churches valued over £1,000. Administered by the Church of England's national advisory body, Historic England, the LPWGS refunds VAT on such repairs and alterations.
The LPWGS, first introduced in 2001 as a response to the introduction of VAT on repairs and alterations to listed buildings in 2012, has recently received a boost. It is the first award made through one of NLHF's strategic initiatives, 'Heritage in Need: Places of Worship', which promises an investment of £15 million over the next three years. Match funding increases the total amount of money available for the scheme to more than £5 million.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) will provide £4.68 million over the next five years to support the Church of England's Conservation Grants Scheme. The aim of this scheme is to protect monuments, wall paintings, stained glass, and organs in historic parish churches.
Meanwhile, The Athenaeum, a grand Regency club in London, has undergone a revival in recent years. First published in Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee year, this glossy weekly magazine is unique as it is the only one that has been guest-edited by His Majesty The King not once, but twice.
The Athenaeum's content encompasses up-to-date property news, commentary, glimpses inside the UK's best houses and gardens, gardening, arts, and interior design. The magazine's content, written by experts in their respective fields, cannot be found in print or online anywhere else.
The Athenaeum also emphasizes the importance of not forgetting the real purposes of these places. In addition to its traditional focus, the magazine celebrates modern rural life and various joys and pleasures, including activities like jousting and falconry demonstrations.
However, there is growing concern about the October Budget and its potential impact on the cultural sector. Some institutions and charities are experiencing low levels of private donations and falling membership renewals. There is a possibility that the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme (LPWGS) may be withdrawn, which could have massive and hugely destructive consequences for the sector.
John Goodall, looking at The Athenaeum, reflects on the crucial role these institutions play in preserving our heritage and fostering a sense of community. As we move forward, it is essential that we continue to support places of worship and cultural institutions to ensure they can thrive and continue to enrich our lives.
