Artisans in Hertford breathe vibrant life into the town square with intricate Turkish yarn crafts
In the heart of Hertford, England, a unique transformation has taken place. The Secret Society of Hertford Crafters, a local arts and crafts organisation, has breathed life into Parliament Square with a stunning yarn tapestry.
The society, primarily known for its Turkish wool fiber arts, was founded in 2017 and has grown to around 150 members. Comprising beginners and skilled artisans, including knitters, crocheters, quilters, and felters, the group meets three times a week over tea to plan and work on projects.
The most recent display, inspired by the society's past project recreating the Tower of London poppies, features Hertford's rivers, wildlife, and community life. The vibrant tapestry covers streets, statues, and public spaces, incorporating various animals and human activities.
The installations are not only a feast for the eyes but also serve a deeper purpose. They aim to spread joy, raise awareness about food waste, promote environmental care, and strengthen community bonds. Residents donate leftover yarn after seeing the society's projects, and much of the yarn used in the displays comes from Turkey, as indicated by labels reading "Made with love in Türkiye".
Kath Carter, a retired police officer and society member, explained the process of setting up the installations early in the morning to surprise the public. The tradition of biannual thematic displays was born from the success of their 2018 project at Hertford Castle, where they recreated the Tower of London poppies.
The installations have become a popular spot for photos, attracting attention to both their artistry and their environmental message. They brighten the town and attract attention from cyclists, walkers, and children visiting during holidays.
In addition to their artistic endeavours, the society also runs a volunteer team that collects surplus fresh food from local supermarkets every day to help the homeless and families in need. They organise quizzes and children's activities, offering small prizes to keep the community engaged.
All proceeds from the sale of handmade yarn toys and accessories go to charities chosen by the society. The display includes a section depicting a litter-filled river, emphasising the importance of keeping nature clean. The society's endeavours are a testament to their commitment to supporting local charities and fostering a sense of community in Hertford.
