Artificial Intelligence Used in Creating Video of US Strike on Venezuelan Narcotics Network?
In a recent development, the United States carried out an attack on a suspected drug-laden boat belonging to the Tren de Aragua narcoterrorist group. The U.S. Government shared a video of the action, recorded with night vision, as evidence. However, the authenticity of the video has been called into question by the Venezuelan Communications Minister, Freddy Náñez.
Náñez, using an AI application called Gemini, suggested that the video was likely created using artificial intelligence. This claim has sparked a debate about the reliability of AI-generated content and its potential use as evidence.
Rodrigo Alonso, a registered user of Gemini, emphasises that the application is not designed to determine if content has been created by a machine or not. Lucas, the global innovation director of the firm Llorente y Cuenca and an expert in AI matters, agrees, stating that AI technology can change its mind and offer erroneous data or even make things up.
Despite efforts, no technology company has been able to create a reliable verification tool that can directly point out that content has been made using AI. As artificial intelligence advances, it will become increasingly difficult to distinguish what is real from what is not.
The video shared by the U.S. Government has low definition, making it more difficult for a machine or person to verify its authenticity. The quality of the video might surprise Gemini because it is probably not capable of dealing with special images of this kind. No human expert consulted sees any signs of falsity in the video.
Sergio Álvarez-Teleña suggests that the quality of the video might be the reason Gemini considers it false, as the tool might have been trained with higher quality videos. In contrast, Juan Ignacio Rouyet warns that we will only be able to trust what we see, not even what governments say, as a result of the advancement of AI.
The attack occurred under the presidency of Donald Trump. The Government's sharing of the video and the subsequent questioning of its authenticity has raised concerns about the use of AI in the verification of evidence and the potential for manipulation in political matters.
This functionality and feature are only accessible to subscribers of the respective AI applications. The debate about the authenticity of the video serves as a reminder of the challenges that lie ahead as AI technology continues to evolve and its role in our society becomes more prominent.
