Artificial Intelligence Training Shifts to Claude Chats, Offering an Exit Option for Users
Anthropic, the AI company behind Claude, is making changes to its data usage policy. Here's what you need to know:
Starting from September 28th, Anthropic will save transcripts of user chats with Claude for AI training purposes. This policy change aims to improve model safety, making systems for detecting harmful content more accurate and less likely to flag harmless conversations.
The new policy applies to Claude Free, Pro, and Max plans. However, it does not cover interactions with the Claude Code tool or Claude for Work, Claude Gov, Claude for Education, APU use, or when connected to third-party platforms such as Google's Vertex AI and Amazon Bedrock.
Chats that have been manually deleted by users will not be used for AI training. Users can opt out of the data usage policy by disabling the toggle that says "You can help improve Claude" in the Settings > Privacy > Help Improve Claude section.
Anthropic has not previously used user data for AI training. The company can use the saved data for training, model improvement, and strengthening the safety guardrails.
It's worth noting that Anthropic is also changing its data retention rules and can now keep a copy of user data for up to five years. This is not surprising due to the data shortage in the industry.
A pop-up notification will inform users about the data usage policy and provide an option to disable the toggle. After September 28th, users will have to manually change their preference from the model training settings dashboard.
The policy change involves saving transcripts of user chats with Claude for AI training purposes. However, it only covers new and resumed chats with Claude, not old chats.
In summary, Anthropic is updating its data usage policy for Claude. The changes include saving user chats for AI training and changing the data retention rules to five years. Users can opt out of the data usage policy by disabling the toggle in the Settings > Privacy > Help Improve Claude section.
