Artificial Intelligence Innovation: Google Introduces 'Nano Banana' AI Image Editor within Gemini Platform

In a significant move, Google has unveiled its latest AI-powered photo editing tool, Gemini 2.5. The announcement was made by Google CEO Sundar Pichai on X (formerly Twitter), confirming the existence of the new model, codenamed Nano Banana.

Google DeepMind has developed Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, a state-of-the-art multimodal AI model for image generation and editing. This model is now integrated into the Gemini app and platform, making it globally available for both free and paid use.

Pichai showcased the capabilities of Gemini 2.5 by editing photos of his dog, Jeffree, in honour of International Dog Day. Despite the edits, Jeffree looked similar in every single picture, indicating a focus on maintaining the likeness of the subject in AI edits.

The edited photos showed Jeffree as a surfer, cowboy, superhero, and chef, demonstrating the app's ability to allow for step-by-step stacking of edits, remixing of textures across photos, blending of images into one, and creation of short animated clips.

Google is positioning Gemini 2.5 as a tool that users will find useful, aiming to keep it competitive against industry giants such as Adobe, OpenAI, and MidJourney in the AI creativity market. Unlike its competitors, Google watermarks every output of Gemini 2.5 with visible and invisible tags.

The app offers advanced editing features without hiding them behind paywalls, making it an attractive option for both amateur and professional users. Google provides the technology for Gemini 2.5 to developers through its API, AI Studio, and Vertex AI, with a pricing structure that could be beneficial for startups, designers, and marketing teams in emerging markets experimenting with AI workflows.

Google's new AI model promises to make edits smarter, sharper, and less uncanny, transforming the photo editing experience. With its user-friendly interface and advanced features, Gemini 2.5 functions more like a creative playground than a traditional image editor.

Embrace your creativity with Gemini 2.5, now available worldwide. Say goodbye to AI photos where the subject looks "almost-but-not-quite" real, and welcome to a new era of smarter, more realistic photo editing.
