OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence research laboratory, has announced the launch of a new tool called Sora. This innovative platform, available for Pro and Plus subscribers, allows users to create videos from text prompts, animate images, extend existing footage, and fill in missing frames.

The tool, initially unveiled in February, has been under development since then and is now accessible to users in the United States and most other countries with Pro and Plus subscriptions. However, it's important to note that Sora is currently only available in the East US 2 region, with OpenAI working to make it available in Europe and the United Kingdom soon.

Sora operates on a credit-based system for video generation. The Plus plan provides 1,000 credits per month, while the Pro plan offers a more generous 10,000 credits. During a live YouTube session, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman showcased the Blend feature, which merges two scenes into one seamless video.

The cost of video generation depends on resolution and length. For instance, 480p videos require between 20 and 150 credits, while 1080p videos use between 100 and 2,000 credits. Sora's current version, known as Sora Turbo, can generate video clips ranging from 5 to 20 seconds in various resolutions.

It's worth mentioning that Sora credits vary for different resolutions and durations. Unused credits do not roll over and are reset monthly. Will Peebles, a technical expert at OpenAI, stated that Sora is an early version and makes mistakes, but it has reached a point where it's genuinely useful for enhancing human creativity.

In August, Alibaba announced the development of Tora, a video generation tool inspired by OpenAI's technology. In November, some testers reportedly uploaded the unreleased Sora tool to Hugging Face in protest.
