Art Gallery Kunsthaus Wiesbaden re-opens its Schulberg studio once more
The historic old building that once housed Werk and Kunstschule Wiesbaden, known as the Kunsthaus, has been reborn as the Atelierhaus. After a general renovation approved by the city council on November 24, 2015, the cultural gem is ready to showcase its transformed beauty.
The renovation, commissioned by the cultural office, was carried out by the architecture firm Lehners & Barbian. The building, now under monument protection, was originally designed as an elementary school in 1863 by the architect Philipp Hoffmann. In 1949, the Werk and Kunstschule moved into the premises, and under the leadership of Vincent Weber from 1954 to 1965, the institution became a renowned training institution oriented towards the Bauhaus.
The Atelierhaus, spanning four floors, houses eleven ateliers for fourteen regional and international artists. The redesigned auditorium, now accessible to all thanks to the installation of an elevator and the renovation of the exhibition room "Aula," will open on September 10, 2025, with the exhibition "Faceless. Women in Prostitution."
Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende expressed his pleasure at the reopening of the Kunsthaus, which hosts six to eight exhibitions annually. The Kunsthaus will celebrate its history and future on September 6, 2025, with open ateliers, workshops, performances, talks, and dance.
The Kunsthalle, which opened in 2011, and the auditorium will present dialogues about contemporary art and socially relevant discourses. The art room for educational offerings is also available, and the Artothek, located at the Kunsthaus, offers art on loan for home use and houses the municipal art collection with 4,000 artworks available for borrowing.
In addition, the Kunsthaus offers innovative and inclusive event and mediation formats. A grant from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety was approved for the energetic optimization of the building.
For any questions regarding the Atelierhaus, citizens can contact the responsible department or office of the Press Office of the State Capital Wiesbaden. The Atelierhaus is set to become a vibrant hub for art and culture in the heart of Wiesbaden.
