Arrests Made in Fatal Shooting of a Congressional Intern in June; Third Suspect Sought

In a significant development, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced on Friday the arrest of two 17-year-olds in connection with a shooting near the D.C. Convention Center on June 30. The shooting claimed the life of Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a 21-year-old Massachusetts college student and a congressional intern for Rep. Ron Estis.

The shooting occurred on the 1200 block of 7th Street, Northwest, around 10:30 p.m. on June 30. The victim, Tarpinian-Jachym, was not the intended target, and the shooting likely stemmed from an ongoing neighborhood crew dispute.

The two teenagers are being charged as adults for first-degree murder while armed. One suspect was arrested at his Northwest residence, while another was taken into custody in the 2600 block of 24th Street, Northeast.

The vehicle used by the teens in the shooting was stolen in Maryland days prior. Despite the arrests, a third suspect in the shooting is still being sought.

Pirro stated that the young suspects involved in such crimes need to be prosecuted in the adult system, not the family court system for rehabilitation. She also expressed her concern about the rising number of violent crimes committed by teenagers and has sought further criminal penalties against juveniles as young as 14.

Pirro accused the city council of not doing enough to prosecute violent offenses carried out by teens. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith, and investigators were also present at the announcement.

The two teenagers had previous involvement in violent crimes, as they had been tried in family court. The details of their identities are not available in the search results.

7News' Jay Korff reached out to Tarpinian-Jachym's family, who are still processing the recent update. The family has not yet made a public statement.

The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to be released in the coming days. The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
