Argentina Becomes India's Top Supplier as Vegetable Oil Trade Surges

Argentina and India are strengthening their trade ties in the vegetable oil sector. Recent high-level visits and record exports highlight the growing partnership between the two nations. Both countries are now focusing on sustainable development and mutual growth in agriculture. Argentina's soybean oil production hit a 10-year high in the 2023/24 season, reaching 8.7 million tons. This boost has made the country a key supplier for India, particularly in soybean and sunflower oil. Between January and July 2025 alone, Argentina shipped 2.1 million tons of soybean oil and 0.42 million tons of sunflower oil to the Indian market.

The relationship deepened in June when India's Prime Minister met Argentina's President Javier Milei. Both leaders emphasised the importance of agricultural cooperation. A delegation from Argentina's Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries later visited New Delhi to explore further collaboration. India also sent its own delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to Argentina two months ago. The visits coincided with Globoil 2025, a major vegetable oil congress held in Mumbai, where Argentine officials participated. The event reinforced Argentina's role as India's most reliable supplier of soft vegetable oils. Under India's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, Argentina has committed to meeting the country's growing demand for vegetable oils. The sector remains a cornerstone of bilateral trade, supporting inclusive and sustainable development.

The exchanges between Argentina and India have solidified their trade relationship in vegetable oils. With record production and ongoing cooperation, Argentina is set to remain a major supplier for India's needs. Both nations continue to work toward expanding agricultural ties in the coming years.
