Approval secured for second attempt: Proposed apartment project in Swindon gets approval for construction
In a recent development, Brett Property Group's project to convert the former Reform Club in Swindon into residential flats has been granted a second approval by Swindon Borough Council. The property, which forms part of a residential terrace, already has a residential appearance, making the transition smoother.
The new plans aim to cater to the growing number of people working from home, a trend that has become more prevalent due to the Covid-19 pandemic and increased fuel costs. To accommodate this, each flat will now include a study room.
The changes are not expected to depart significantly from the established residential character of the building, street scene, and character of the area. The addition of study rooms, while a new feature, is seen as a necessary improvement to the development's viability, making it more likely to receive a lending facility.
The project, initially planned in July 2020, was temporarily halted due to Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020/21. However, the new plans maintain the same number of overall flats as the original plans.
The development retains one car parking space per dwelling and provides adequate cycle provision on site, promoting sustainable transportation. The front elevation will be altered to provide vehicular access to the rear parking.
The change of use to residential would introduce a more compatible use in terms of noise and disturbance with adjoining properties than the existing use of the property as a community club. The World Health Organisation declared that Covid-19 is no longer a major cause for concern earlier this year, paving the way for the resumption of the project.
The search results do not contain information about the organization that initiated the project or the name of the building where this conversion is planned. Nonetheless, the new plan has been approved, marking a significant step forward in the redevelopment of the former Reform Club in Swindon.
