Apple Launches Self-Service Repair Program for iPhones and Macs

In a significant move towards promoting DIY repairs, Apple has officially launched its self-service repair program today. This program allows users to fix their iPhones and Macs using Apple-provided repair kits.

Each repair kit contains a variety of tools and parts necessary for specific device repairs. For instance, the repair kits for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 typically include a pentalobe screwdriver, suction handle, tweezers, spudger, opening picks, and sometimes replacement screws or adhesive strips.

However, the Torque Driver tool, which is essential for tightening and loosening screws, is not available for individual rental. A single Torx Security Bit, another commonly used tool, costs $13, while the Torque Driver tool itself retails at $85.

Apple's rental kit, priced at $49 (including shipping), includes all the tools and parts needed for specific device repairs. The kit lasts for 7 days, after which a fee and tax are charged via a hold on the customer's credit card. It's important to note that the rental kit does not offer the option to rent individual tools a la carte.

The rental kit is quite substantial, weighing 43 pounds and 36 pounds, individually, and measuring 20 inches wide and 47 inches tall when stacked. This might require users to stretch before handling them. The rental kit cases are designed to be mobile, with wheels included, but there are no additional charges for these.

In addition to the repair kits, customers can now purchase individual parts from the "Self Service Repair Store" to repair their devices at home. The Q&A section of the Tool Kit Rental page provides a full list of the included parts.

While the rental kit is a cost-effective way to access genuine components that most people don't have in their toolbox, it may only be needed once or twice for repairs. Apple's new right-to-repair initiative does not currently support older iPhone models.

Looking ahead, Apple plans to add laptops and desktops to its self-service repair program later this year, potentially including rental kits for Mac repairs. This expansion could make DIY repairs more accessible for a wider range of Apple users.
