Apple TV models from the past will lose the YouTube app support starting next month.
Starting early next month, third-generation Apple TV devices will no longer be able to use the YouTube app. This is due to the fact that newer tvOS versions required for the app (such as tvOS 17.6 or later) are not supported on these older devices, making the YouTube app incompatible.
The YouTube spokesperson confirmed this loss of support to Gizmodo, stating that the change is being made to ensure users have the best experience on YouTube. The decision was also reported by 9to5Mac.
However, users with Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD will continue to access the YouTube app natively. For those with third-generation Apple TVs, they will still be able to view some YouTube content, but will need to use AirPlay to watch it on their devices.
The rumoured next-generation Apple TV might help lower the costs of some existing models, but its release has not been confirmed yet. This means that users may need to consider upgrading their Apple TV if they want to continue accessing the YouTube app natively.
The cost of upgrading to a newer Apple TV model might be a consideration for users who want to avoid using AirPlay for YouTube. The cost of newer Apple TV models might not decrease with the release of the next-generation model.
iPhone and iPad owners will still be able to access the YouTube app on their devices. Therefore, it appears that the change is specifically affecting third-generation Apple TV users.
In summary, the YouTube app will no longer be available on Apple TV 3rd generation devices starting in early March. Users with these devices will need to use AirPlay to watch YouTube content, or consider upgrading to a newer Apple TV model to access the app natively.
