Apology issued by ex-ambassador Melnyk
In January 2023, Andrij Melnyk began a new chapter in his diplomatic career as Ukraine's ambassador to the United Nations in New York. However, this is not his first foray into international diplomacy. From January 2015 to October 2022, Melnyk served as the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany.
During his tenure in Germany, Melnyk found himself in the spotlight for his impassioned words and criticisms of the German government. In the early months of Russia's war against Ukraine, Melnyk referred to then Chancellor Olaf Scholz as "offended liverwurst." He later apologised for his remarks, acknowledging that his emotions got the better of him during a difficult time.
Despite these criticisms, Melnyk looks back on his time in Germany with great gratitude. He refers to it as his "second home." The country, he says, has been incredibly supportive of Ukraine during its time of need.
Melnyk's time in Germany was marked by repeated criticisms of the then coalition government for delayed weapons deliveries. He was vocal about the urgent need for military aid to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression.
Now, in his current role at the United Nations, Melnyk realizes that he cannot live or act without emotions and passion. He continues to advocate for Ukraine, using his diplomatic skills to further the country's interests on the global stage.
Melnyk's journey from Germany to the United Nations is a testament to his commitment to Ukraine and his unwavering passion for his work. As he continues to serve his country, he remains a powerful voice for Ukraine on the international stage.
