Anwar's Take: RM100 Sara Aid Isn't the Only Solution, But It's a Component of a Broader STR and MySara Programmes
In a historic move, the Government of Malaysia has provided a one-off RM100 Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) appreciation aid to over 22 million individuals aged 18 and above. This marks the highest amount ever allocated for cash assistance in the nation's history, with a total of RM15 billion set aside for the Sara initiative and the existing MySara and Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) programmes.
The seventh day of the Sara Appreciation initiative went smoothly, with over 1.7 million recipients recording total sales of RM100 million as of 10.30pm. The aid, disbursed from August 31, is intended to ease the burden of living expenses for millions of Malaysians.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivered a speech at the closing ceremony of the Kedah edition of the Madani Rakyat Programme, held at the Baling District Council Sports Complex in Baling. In his speech, Anwar Ibrahim shared a recorded video message about the aid on Facebook, stating that it is admired by foreign leaders for its effective support to low-income households.
Despite being difficult to replicate, the Sara initiative has garnered praise from foreign leaders, including Asean leaders, who have questioned the cost of the aid. However, Anwar Ibrahim defended the initiative, claiming that it is a meaningful gesture to help those in need and that its benefits outweigh any potential criticisms.
To date, nine million individuals have received the aid, with the total number of recipients expected to reach 22 million by the end of the initiative. The aid serves as a supplement to the MySara and Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) programmes, providing much-needed financial assistance to millions of Malaysians.
At the closing ceremony, Anwar Ibrahim also highlighted the success of the Madani Rakyat Programme, which has reached over nine million individuals since its inception. The programme, which aims to empower and uplift communities, has been instrumental in providing essential services and support to those in need.
In conclusion, the Sara Appreciation initiative is a significant step forward in the Government of Malaysia's efforts to support low-income households and alleviate the burden of living expenses. The initiative has been praised by foreign leaders and has already provided aid to over nine million individuals, with the total number of recipients expected to reach 22 million by the end of the initiative.
