Anticipates Record Military Aid Disbursement to Ukraine From EU
The European Union (EU) has been a steadfast ally to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion, providing a record-breaking 25 billion euros in military aid this year. As of now, member states have already allocated over 169 billion euros in total financial aid, with over 63 billion euros earmarked for military support.
In a recent speech to the Parliament, EU Foreign Affairs Representative Kaja Kallas highlighted the importance of this aid, stating, "The EU is making progress on a plan to secure another two million rounds of artillery ammunition for Ukrainian forces this year." The collective efforts of EU countries have already seen 80 percent of the required artillery ammunition supplied, with the aim to deliver the full amount by October 2025.
Despite a significant decrease in weapons deliveries from the US following the inauguration of President Donald Trump, the EU has shown unwavering commitment to Ukraine's defense. Kallas did not address this decrease in her speech, instead focusing on the progress being made and the need for further action.
In her speech, Kallas also called on members of the Parliament to support plans for a powerful new package of Russia sanctions. She emphasized that international sanctions have ensured that Russia has lost 154 billion dollars (121 billion euros) from oil sales alone, and has 450 billion dollars (383 billion euros) less for waging war.
However, no new military aid commitments were announced in Kallas' speech. Despite this, the EU's support for Ukraine remains a top priority, with the goal of reaching 100 percent of the required artillery ammunition by October.
The EU's aid is crucial in helping Ukraine defend itself against Russia, and this amount is more than ever before provided by EU member states. The EU's unwavering support serves as a beacon of hope for Ukraine as it continues to face challenges in its ongoing struggle for independence.
