Anticipated NFL Season in 2025 Predicted to Generate $30 Billion in Legal Wagers
As the NFL season gets underway, the Association of Gaming Operators (AGA) is urging a focus on consumer protections and responsible play. With 38 states now allowing legal NFL bets, the current legal sports betting landscape is experiencing growth and preparing for record betting volumes. However, no additional states have been identified as joining the fray for the 2025 NFL season, according to available sources.
Bill Miller, AGA President and CEO, emphasized the positive impact of legal, regulated sports betting on fan culture and friendly competition. He also highlighted the importance of having a game plan before placing a bet, as the industry encourages responsible play.
Despite the growth, a significant portion of bettors continue to use unregulated sportsbooks. This trend, combined with stronger calls for regulation and a focus on gambling risks, may be slowing the industry's expansion.
Interestingly, prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket are not included in the AGA's total, indicating a distinction between traditional sports betting and these alternative platforms.
As of the season's kickoff, Missouri joined the 37 states that had already legalized sports betting. The ongoing industry growth and preparations for increased betting volumes suggest a promising future for legal sports betting in the US. However, details on further expansions in legal states for NFL bets in 2025 are yet to be specified.
