Anticipated Improvements in the Next Generation Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Controllers: A Look at Three Notable Upgrades

Nintendo has officially announced its next-generation console, the Switch 2. The much-anticipated successor to the popular Nintendo Switch is set to hit the market on June 5, 2025, priced at $449.

During the April Nintendo Direct, more concrete details on the Switch 2 will be provided. While the teaser trailer offered a glimpse of the console, further specifics about its features remain under wraps.

One of the most significant changes in the Switch 2's design is the Joy-Con controllers. The new Joy-Cons will feature a magnetic attachment for easier connection, a departure from the original model's slot system.

The magnetic Joy-Cons are expected to be robust, with a strong magnetic attraction to support handheld mode. However, the durability and resistance to falling out of the Switch 2's Joy-Cons is yet to be determined.

The Switch 2's Joy-Cons are also set to undergo a significant overhaul, with a larger design compared to the original Switch's Joy-Cons. One of the most intriguing changes is the potential inclusion of a new, mysterious button.

Rumours suggest that the Joy-Cons may also utilise Hall effect joysticks, which could potentially eliminate drift, a common issue with the original Joy-Cons. Nintendo has patented Hall effect switches, adding credence to these rumours.

However, it has been clarified that there are no Hall-effect sticks in the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons. Instead, Nintendo confirmed in April 2025 that Hall-effect sensors are not used in the Joy-Con 2 controllers.

Another exciting possibility is the inclusion of a new feature for a handy mouse function in the Switch 2's Joy-Cons. The specifics about the Switch 2's features, including this potential mouse-like operation of the Joy-Cons, will be discussed in the April Nintendo Direct.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Switch 2 as we approach its release date. The anticipation is building, and gamers worldwide are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the Nintendo Switch saga.
