Anger among protesters intensifies, leading to the burglarization of the Indonesian Minister of Finance's residence.
In the heart of Indonesia, the nation's capital Jakarta, and other major cities, including Yogyakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya in Java, and Medan in North Sumatra province, protests have erupted, marking the most violent demonstrations of President Prabowo Subianto's presidency.
The unrest, sparked by financial perks for lawmakers, has gained momentum following the tragic death of motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan. The protests have not only shaken the capital but have also extended their reach to the homes of several politicians.
On Saturday night, crowds attacked the property of NasDem party politician Ahmad Sahroni in South Tangerang, a city neighboring Jakarta. The incident resulted in damage to objects, including a car, and the looting of items such as a television, sound system, living room decorations, clothes, plates, and bowls.
A witness reported a mob storming the house of lawmaker Eko Hendro Purnomo on the same night. The following day, Sunday, the house of another NasDem party politician, Nafa Urbach, was ransacked, and AFP journalists witnessed trucks carrying away objects from Sri Mulyani Indrawati's house. However, it is crucial to clarify that there are no credible or verified reports indicating that her residential house in South Tangerang was attacked and destroyed during any period.
The incident at Sri Mulyani Indrawati's house was divided into two waves. The first wave consisted of dozens of motorcycles, each carrying two to three people. The second wave, approximately 150 strong, followed suit. It is worth noting that Sri Mulyani Indrawati, an influential figure who has served as finance minister for three different presidents and once held the position of managing director at the World Bank, was not inside the house during the incident.
Soldiers were guarding Sri Mulyani Indrawati's residence on Sunday afternoon, ensuring her safety. Other lawmakers' homes have also been looted in recent days, including Ahmad Sahroni's from the NasDem party.
As the protests continue, it is essential to maintain peace and order while addressing the concerns of the people. The Southeast Asian economy, the identity of which remains unspecified, is experiencing the largest protests of its current president's term. The hope is that these demonstrations will lead to positive change and a more equitable distribution of resources for all Indonesian citizens.
