In the French city of Besançon, the highly anticipated trial of Frédéric Péchier, a former anesthetist, is underway. Péchier is accused of poisoning 30 patients, 12 of whom tragically lost their lives.

The trial, which began on an unspecified date, has seen some witnesses testify at the bar on Monday. The accused, Péchier, has returned to his hometown for the duration of the proceedings.

Péchier has been barred from leaving his home since the beginning of the case, a measure taken to ensure his attendance at the trial. His state of health is a concern, with fears he may attempt suicide, a worry that stems from his past actions. In 2021, he was known to have attempted suicide.

Psychiatrists and psychologists have described Péchier as a depressed man. His state of mind is crucial to understanding his actions, as the trial aims to elucidate the cases, including suspicious medical interventions and the accused doctor's knowledge of the patients' conditions.

The extensive judicial process involves over 150 witnesses and 15 experts, who will testify in the case. The trial will also re-interrogate Péchier on September 22.

If found guilty, Péchier faces a life sentence in prison. The civil parties involved in the case fear that he may attempt suicide and have expressed their concerns to the authorities.

The trial is a significant event in French justice, shedding light on the alleged crimes committed by Péchier and seeking justice for the victims and their families. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of medical ethics and the trust placed in healthcare professionals.
