Android introduces an updated 'System services' page within Google
In July, Google introduced a new feature to Android devices: the System Services page. This page, accessible through the Settings app, is designed to update background apps that don't have homescreen icons or interfaces, and aren't listed in the Play Store's main updates.
To find the System Services page, open the Settings app, navigate to Google, and switch to the "All services" tab. Then, scroll to "Privacy & security" and select "System services." On Pixel devices, you can start by tapping the top card with your name and profile image in Settings.
The System Services page offers several advantages for users. It allows you to update services immediately if available, as well as "Remove updates" for the services. However, it does not display version numbers for the services.
The page lists services as "Up to date" and "Available updates." Some examples include Adaptive Connective Services, Android System Intelligence, Android System Key Verifier, Android System SafetyCore, Android System WebView, Cross-Device Services, Device Connectivity Service, Device Health Services, Google Partner Setup, Google Play Protect Service, Google Play services, Google Play Services for AR, Search Engine Selector, Settings Services, SIM Manager, and System parental controls.
Google Play services, which includes Fast Pair, Quick Share, and Unknown Tracker Alerts, is also included on the System Services page. In addition, the page offers updates for various other system services provided by Google, such as specialized APIs and system-level features.
One such feature is the for end-to-end encryption key management introduced in Android 15. This feature, along with advanced permission checks for content URIs and improved accessibility functions like enhanced Braille display support, operates at the OS or platform level, distinct from the standard Play Services update bundles.
It's important to note that the System Services page does not offer updates for third-party applications downloaded from the Play Store. If you wish to check for updates on these applications, you should do so through the Play Store itself.
Finally, the System Services page includes a link to "Join System services beta." By joining the beta, you can gain early access to new features and improvements for Google Play services and all the other services listed on this page.
In conclusion, the new System Services page provides a convenient and efficient way for Android users to manage and update their system services. By offering updates for a wide range of services and allowing users to join the beta, Google is taking steps to improve the overall user experience on Android devices.
